Road safety is something every responsible driver takes very seriously and is something we, as Australians, are all working towards improving. In 2015, there were 1,209 road fatalities in Australia and despite the fact that this is much improved compared to even 5 years ago, it’s something we need to continue to work at and cut down. Car manufacturers like Mitsubishi have the technology now to increase the safety of drivers that do happen to have accidents - which has certainly had an effect - but it’s obviously in everybody’s best interests to cut down the number of accidents in the first place.
In this article, we’ll take a look at some of the main causes of car accidents and how they can potentially be avoided and prevented.
Drunk Driving
Drinking Alcohol Causes Accident While Driving |
One of the leading causes of accidents and one of the most dangerous behaviors on our roads remains drunk driving, yet it’s something so easily preventable. Larger fines and criminal charges are now applied to those being caught in the act and this has had an effect. Victoria is also tested more motorists than ever before. Since 1997, more than 20 million drivers have been tested for alcohol on our roads, with some 99.7% thankfully being under the legal limit.
Many people tend to think it will never happen to them until it’s all too late, that’s why it’s wise to avoid driving under the influence at all costs and making prior arrangements to get home if you are planning on going out for a few drinks.
Distracted Driving
Distraction While Driving Causes Accident |
Distracted driving can be difficult to define but certainly in the modern age, using a phone while driving fits the bill. It can be difficult to have the discipline, but texting or talking on the phone without hands-free while you drive can be extremely dangerous as taking your eyes off the road for even a split second can end in tragedy. The government is certainly cracking down on the phenomenon, with larger fines being handed out. Studies show that drivers that are talking on the one without hands-free are 4 times more likely to be in an accident and those that text are 23 times more likely.
While it’s not enforceable in the same way, driving while tired can be very dangerous as well and if you’re going on a long drive it’s wise to stop for a power nap if you feel the need. Even driving when angry has been shown to lead you to make mistakes and drive more recklessly than you otherwise would.
Speeding
They say ‘speed kills’ for a reason. Consistently one of the main causes of car accidents on our roads every year, excessive speeding is extremely dangerous because it reduces reaction times and increases the chance of the driver losing control of the vehicle. That said, a huge number of motorists speed on Australian roads. Always take care to stay at the speed limit and you’ll reduce your chance of causing an accident significantly.
The reality is that mistakes do happen and human error means that there’s always a chance you have an accident whenever you take the car out for a spin. But as you’ve read, many of the main causes can be avoided - it just takes a little discipline.
